Both hand and power tools are commonplace in practically every industry and are a part of our daily life. These instruments enable us to carry out tasks that might otherwise be challenging or impossible. However, when used or maintained incorrectly, these straightforward instruments can be dangerous and have the potential to result in serious injury. To lessen or eliminate these risks, special attention must be paid to the safety of hand and power tools.

Air Tools

• It is necessary to tie pneumatic power tools to the hose in order to prevent unintentional disconnections. To avoid accidental expulsion of attachments, safety clips or retainers must be firmly attached.

• Mushroomed heads must not be present on impact tools.
• Wooden handles must be tight to the tool and free of fractures and splinters.
• When jaws are sprung to the point of slipping, wrenches must not be utilized.
• Tools that use electric power must be properly grounded or double-insulated.
• When utilizing hand tools, the proper personal protective equipment must be used, such as safety glasses with side shields, face shields, leather work gloves, or leather work boots.

Portable Power Tools and Equipment

Although each type of tool has particular risks that must be considered, the following safety guidelines apply to all power tools in Canada.

• Avoid using power tools or equipment unless you have been given permission to.
• Check your tools every day to make sure they are in good working condition. Use only tools that are in good working order.
• Utilize tools in the way and for the intended purpose.
• All electrical and power tools must be properly grounded.
